Souilhanels…

Les origines du village de Souilhanels semblent remonter au XIIIe s et une église construite au XIVe s. L’histoire de Souilhanels est marquée par un évènement où politique et religion sont intimement mêlées. Pendant les Guerres de Religion, en novembre 1625, eut lieu la bataille de Souilhe entre les armées du gouverneur du Languedoc, le duc de Montmorancy et les troupes protestantes du Duc de Rohan.

Les troupes catholiques de Montmorancy occupaient le village de Souilhanels où elles s’étaient retranchées. Elles furent attaquées par les Huguenots qui arrivaient par la route de Castelnaudary. La victoire fut celle de Montmorancy qui repoussa les protestants du village et les dispersa. De cet évènement, on peux retenir la volonté des villageois qui, quelques siècles plus tard, ont tout mis en œuvre pour reconstruire leur église au début du XIXe s.

Souilhanels ... The originsof Souilhanels seem to go back to the 13 th century and to a church built in the 14 th century. The history of Souilhanels was marked by an event in which politics and religion intermingled very closely. In November 1625, during the Wars of Religion, the battle of Souilhe took place between the armies of the Governor of Languedoc, the Duke of Montmorency and the Protestant troops of the Duke of Rohan. As the Catholic troops of Montmorency were occupying the village of Souilhanels, where they had taken up position, they were attacked by the Huguenots arriving from Castelnaudary. Montmorency was victorious, chasing the Protestants away from the village and dispersing them. This event highlights the determination of the villagers who, a few centuries later in the early part of the 19 th century, moved heaven and earth to rebuild their church. ...Souilhanels’ breathtaking panorama Souilhanels is a hill-top village and it affords one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Lauragais.
