La Verdun Square corresponds to the last expansion of the city when it was elevated to the rank of Bastide in 1366. A hall allowing the holding of covered markets and the herb market was built in the center of this new place, there were also weights and measures. Redeveloped and restored many times, it today offers, around its fountain and under its centuries-old plane trees, an attractive setting for the many businesses that surround it.

The Latapie hotel (Grand Rue) is one of these beautiful XNUMXth century hotels, now a nursery school. Note the monumental entrance door whose carved wooden doors are listed as a Historic Monument. Above the lintel of the door, the coat of arms of the town of Castelnaudary: three large crenellated towers inspired by the seal of the town accompanied by three fleurs-de-lys symbols of royalty. Under the coat of arms, a woman's face wearing a Phrygian cap (partly broken) has been added, she represents the Republic.
