Description

Leaving the village of Saint-Papoul, the view wanders from valley to valley, between Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees. The song of birds will enliven your journey, from the hedges bordering the fields. Open your eyes: farms and beautiful residences can be seen along this route. You can also take the opportunity to visit the church of Notre Dame de Bassens, near which you will not fail to pass. For the first part of the route, follow the yellow markings. When you join the GR7, you will follow the white and red markings to return to Saint-Papoul, via Notre-Dame de Bassens.

Getting to the starting pointto report a problem

Step 1

From the school car park, you follow Chemin du Carla and move away from Saint-Papoul. You soon come to a fork in the road.

Step 2

Here you are at the crest. The Black Mountain, the foothills of the Massif Central, stretches to the left. A little further along the path, the Pyrenees range blocks the horizon on the south side, beyond the Lauragais plain.

Step 3

Hedges structure the landscape. These shrubs of varied species (buckthorns, blackthorns, etc.) provide nectar for insects, shelter for sparrows, an obstacle to winds and protection for crops.

Step 4

Your route crosses the Cahuzac estate, a residence inhabited in the XNUMXth century by a Chaurian merchant who gave it his name. This property is private.

Step 5

The view extends over the entire Lauragais Audois plain, from Fanjeaux and Montreal to Castelnaudary. Closer to you, the village of Saint-Martin-Lalande and its bell tower emerge from the hillside.

Step 6

They are called "bordes". These farms are longhouses oriented in the direction of the prevailing winds. The 19th century surrounded them with trees (cedars, pines, etc.). They form islets scattered across the ocean of cultures…

Step 7

“Fontcaude” evokes the presence of a source. Water runs everywhere, essential. A beautiful arbutus tree reminds us that we are in a Mediterranean country. The walk continues in the intimacy of this countryside.

Step 8

The path goes back into the forest then comes out in a warren where the Escons photovoltaic park is installed. 6000Mwh/year, or the consumption of 5000 people, are produced here, without disturbing the rabbits.

Step 9

Saint-Martin-Lalande and the Canal du Midi are a few kilometers away via the GR7. On the road linking Saint-Martin-Lalande to Lasbordes, to the left of Serres, the first pitched battle of the Crusade against the Albigensians took place.

Step 10

Notre-Dame de Bassens is a sanctuary, a place of peace, ideal for picnics or meditation. It was born from the discovery of a Virgin in a field, and was built by the surrounding inhabitants. An artificial cave was created, reminiscent of that of Lourdes. The rest of your journey is very pleasant: you walk on a path, then on a small road around Falga. Soon you cross the D103 road. A long wall marks the approach to the powerful cathedral abbey of Saint-Papoul. The master of Cabestany left a masterpiece there that you will see up close.
