Description

Castelnaudary is a peaceful town nestled on an exceptional heritage site: the Canal du Midi. It is in the Grand Bassin that it plunges its reflection, between the locks of St-Roch and the Island of Cybèle. Today commercial traffic has given way to pleasure boating, punctuated by a pleasant series of locks and small bridges. The city has become the most important marina on the Canal du Midi. The old brick town, overlooking the Lauragais plain, is the world capital of Cassoulet. The imposing Saint-Michel collegiate church dominates the town, surrounded by a labyrinth of old streets with half-timbered houses and private mansions, testimonies of a rich commercial past.

Your itinerary

Getting to the starting pointto report a problem

Step 1

You start this walk from the Place de la République, going up the Cours de la République, you continue in the same direction up the Rue Gambetta, which takes you to the Place de Verdun. Do not cross it, go along its south side to turn right and go down Rue Soumet.

Step 2

When you reach rue de Dunkerque, cross it and turn left, to immediately turn to your right into rue du Général Dejean. Soon take rue de lamercie on the right, which will give you access to the charming town hall gardens.

Step 3

From the town hall gardens, take Rue Neuf, then turn left into Rue Prosper Estieu. You return to rue Dejean and go down to the right to reach the port quay. Turn left onto the Quai du Port to reach the Harbor Master’s Office.

Step 4

From the Harbor Master's Office, continue along the Quai du Port towards the Old Bridge, which you cross. From there, turn left to follow the large basin, to see the island of Cybèle, you can take a break at the square André Corre, or even reach the Saint-Roch locks, located in the district of the same name , it's well worth it! You will then retrace your steps to the old bridge, before turning left to go down Avenue Paul Riquet.

Step 5

You are soon in front of the station and turn right to go up avenue de la gare. When you reach Avenue Arnaut-Vidal, you cross it and take the washerwomen's passage. This gives you access to the edge of the Canal, or to the towpath.

Step 6

Go to the right, so you follow the Canal du Midi, which is on your left. You reach the next bridge, which happens to be the new bridge. Turn left to cross the new bridge and go up the Cours de la République, which takes you back to your starting point.
