Built by Catherine de Medici, this monument now hosts an exhibition on cassoulet:
“In the Flavors of Heritage: Castelnaudary Cassoulet”.
The Lauragais Museum was built when Catherine de Medici, Countess of Lauragais, made Castelnaudary a Seneschal, with the king's agreement. A court of civil and criminal justice, called “Présidial”, was then built right next to the castle. It was completed in 1585. In 1623, Louis XIII had the Castelnaudary castle demolished, but the court functioned until 1926. Its presence allowed the installation of numerous Toulouse judges and lawyers in the city; very beautiful private mansions still bear witness to this.
Today the Présidial is a primary school, and the prison has become the “Museum of France”. Inside, you can visit the small Saint Pierre chapel which contains two magnificent reliquaries-busts from the 18th century.
