PIGEONNIER

Recently restored, this beautiful dovecote (XNUMXth century) belongs to the typology of dovecotes on pillars. It consists of a cubic box resting on four circular sandstone pillars whose tops are fitted with a collar against rodents. The building is topped with a four-sided roof made of flat tiles. The dovecote holds a special place in the local history of Lauragais. Its main function is utilitarian: pigeon breeding was initially for food, then its skills as great travelers returning faithfully to its dovecote were quickly observed and “the carrier pigeon” was born!
Other dovecotes still exist: that of Marquein visible from the road, the two dovecotes of St Michel de Lanès dating from the XNUMXth century in flat bricks, or that of Belflou, more surprising because located in a tower of the surrounding wall fortified castle!
